It was a busy day at the legislature Wednesday as House Republicans quickly overrode a series of vetoes from Democratic Gov. Josh Stein that had been sitting on the calendar for nearly a year.
Until now, Republicans had lacked the votes to do so. But two absences from key lawmakers, Democratic Rep. Shelly Willingham and now-unaffiliated Rep. Carla Cunningham, gave Republicans the numbers they needed to push the overrides through.

The bills in question broadly ban diversity, equity and inclusion practices in state government and schools and require the state to further cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
One of those bills, the one dealing with DEI in government, must go to the Senate for a final vote. The rest are now law.
