Temperatures will be high this weekend, with a peak of 99 degrees predicted Friday, and thunderstorms are in the forecast, according to AccuWeather. However, there are some indoor weekend events to take advantage of, too.
Here are five events worth checking out before Monday rolls back around.
Kick off the weekend at the Durham Foodie Fare. This monthly pop-up market by The MAKRS Society brings more than 20 food trucks to the park, serving a wide range of local culinary creations. There will be live music, North Carolina markers, artisans and small businesses right downtown.
The Fruit is hosting a pop-up gallery with contemporary fine art installations from underground artists. The event is part of the Downtown Durham Inc., Third Friday downtown gallery circuit. This is free, open to the public, and you can bring a cold drink and mingle among Durham’s independent art scene.

In 1976, during the Fourth of July weekend, Durham celebrated America’s Bicentennial with an arts festival at West Point on the Eno. To mark the 50th anniversary of this event, the Museum of Durham History has partnered with the organizers of the original celebration to share photos and memories. This informal reception offers a great way to dive into the city’s local heritage.
For the sixth year, Book Harvest is holding its annual block party. This free, outdoor event offers a day of activities and free children’s books. Kids from infants to high schoolers can take home a book to keep forever. Expect magic shows, fairy hair and poems from the Poetry Fox.
You still have time to catch the Broadway production of “The Notebook” before it wraps up its run in Durham this weekend. Based on the best-selling novel and film starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, this is a great date night or a relaxed Sunday outing. Tickets start at $41 and are moving quickly.
