On this day in 2005, a rare earthquake struck the mountain village of Hot Springs, shaking the residents awake and confused in the dark of night.
The temblor measured just 3.7 on the Richter scale, but it still scared pants off Appalachian residents unaccustomed to moving Earth.
“It was like a loud explosion, a real loud noise,” said Mayor Deborah Ponder. “Then for a second or two, a tremor. Everything kind of moved. Every light in town came on. People got up to see what happened.”
Rocker Meat Loaf teed off at the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic in Cary, shooting so badly he winced publicly and began choosing spectators to swing for him. “Another pinch hitter for Meat Loaf …” the announcer joked before the crowd of 17,500.

In 1926, the prominent Page farming family of Durham experienced a second patricide on the same spot.
The N&O reported F.H. “Fab” Page killed Le Roy Page II with a “heavy stick.” A scuffle apparently began when the younger Page objected to his father’s dalliance with a woman to whom he was “declared to have given automobiles.”
Half a century earlier, Le Roy Page’s brother killed his father with a rifle in the same place, fleeing “never to be heard from again.”
