I’m writing again to advise you that the vehicle registration requirement isn’t going away. It’s expanding.
It has been a year since North Hills began asking visitors to register their vehicle when they park. Failure to do so could result in a $35 fine.
“Any parking program rolling out’s a big change, but we’ve definitely seen a lot of positives to it,” Stacey Buescher, executive vice president of commercial operations at Kane Realty, told me in a phone call.
Parking registration is already required in areas across North Hills, including decks and street-level parking in the Park District (where Chuy’s is), the Innovation District (where Good Graces, Standard and Benchwarmers Bagels are) and Bank of America Tower.
Kane previously warned that parking regulations would eventually be implemented throughout all four districts at North Hills. We’re getting closer to that coming true.
“We don’t start managing this, it’s going to be people sitting in the exact same spot for eight-plus hours and not there for the intention of using our retail locations,” Buescher said.
In recent weeks, Kane has started installing cameras at the entrances and exits to the Lassiter District, where Quail Ridge Books and Vivace are, and at the Main District.
Also, more signs have gone up in medians within parking lots and near parking spaces facing storefronts.
The signs were still blank as of Thursday, but they’ll be plastered with parking instructions in time for the requirements to take effect, which Buescher said will be early Q1 2027 — after the busy holiday shopping season. So you still have a few months before you need to worry about registering your vehicle if you’re picking up Chipotle or browsing the candles at Anthropologie.
“It’s such a big property,” Buescher said. “We’ve got to kind of put things out in advance and get ready for it, so that’s what you’re seeing.”
The cameras will capture vehicles’ license plates, Buescher said, and record when vehicles come in and leave. They’re not the controversial Flock cameras, she said. (Read more about the cameras here.)

In addition to the parking areas in the Lassiter and Main districts, Kane plans to roll out parking registration to the Advance Auto Parts deck and Midtown Plaza decks, Buescher said.
But there will be some parking areas in North Hills that will remain open lots, Buescher told me. Those include the parking deck near Target and the surface lot next to the gas station, facing Six Forks Road.
If all this talk of tower parking decks and districts is confusing you, that’s understandable. And if you’re anything like me, coming back to your vehicle to find a citation on your windshield will definitely spoil your mood. (However, Buescher said Kane is waiving fees as a one-time courtesy, to help people get used to the parking rules.)
My advice is, if you’re going to North Hills, keep your eyes open when you’re parking. Look around for signs near your parking space, and if there are some, make sure you scan that QR code and register your vehicle before you wander off.

If you want to double check, go to the North Hills website (visitnorthhills.com/parking) before you leave home. There’s a map of all the parking areas around the property, and areas where you need to register your vehicle are marked with the Power Parking logo — a yellow lightning bolt inside a blue dot.
You get two hours of complimentary parking anywhere registration is required, Hannah Smith, senior marketing manager for Kane Realty, told me in an email. (Previously, visitors could have three hours of free parking.)
And unlike the city-owned parking decks in downtown Raleigh, which offer two hours of complimentary parking during weekdays, you can get multiple complimentary parking sessions in the same day; you just need to avoid back-to-back parking sessions in the same district.
If you stay longer than two hours, you’ll have to pay. Rates vary based on how long you extend your parking session, but even the highest rate, for eight to 24 hours of additional parking, is less than the fine for failing to register your vehicle. And if you register to park and pay for an extended session, don’t overstay your welcome — you could face a $24 fine for that.
