The Heights House Hotel in Raleigh and the Fearrington House Inn in Pittsboro were awarded one Michelin Key this month, joining seven other North Carolina hotels in the worldwide guide. Heights House is the comparative newcomer, a boutique hotel brought to life from the bones of a ramshackle mansion.
“Back in 2018, we saw a run-down 160-year-old mansion and knew what it could be,” the owners of Heights House wrote on social media in response to the Michelin Key news. “Turns out we were onto something. Getting this recognition feels like the validation of every decision we made along the way and we are very grateful for it.”
Two hotels in the Western North Carolina mountains earned even greater honors, taking home Two Keys, which Michelin describes as “exceptional stays:” The Swag in Waynesville and The Cataloochee Ranch in Maggie Valley.
While the Michelin Stars have been in place for nearly a century, honoring exceptional restaurants around the world, the Michelin Keys are practically brand new. Michelin first awarded Keys in 2024. North Carolina saw its honored hotels more than double in the 2026 guide.
