From an iconic barbecue joint to the home ice of the Stanley Cup champions, the game allows players to make stops around town as they vie to own fictional slices of North Carolina history and culture.
Monopoly: Raleigh Edition hit the shelves after it was unveiled Wednesday, Sept. 23. Top Trumps USA, which has a licensing partnership with game company Hasbro, said it was flooded with suggestions of local spots to include.
“We appreciate all those who suggested landmarks, organizations and businesses that make Raleigh unique and truly special,” Katie Hubbard, sales executive for Top Trumps USA, said in a news release. “And we are pleased so many of them raced in to win the opportunity for a place on the board.”
Here’s what we know about the institutions that made it into the game — and how you can tell The News & Observer about other places you think should have been added.
Monopoly: Raleigh Edition came together after game makers put out a call for nominations in September 2025. Top Trumps USA worked with Visit Raleigh as it determined which places were most popular and which ones wanted to be on the board.
“It was really cool to see how many places people were passionate about,” Hubbard told The N&O in a Thursday, Sept. 24 phone interview. “But with a Monopoly board, it’s always hard to, of course, satisfy everyone because there’s only 22 property squares.”
The game features these 31 local institutions and icons:
Places on the list — including Two Roosters Ice Cream and William Peace University — went online to glow about making it onto the game board.
Of course, we think The N&O deserved a spot in the new game. And we noticed it didn’t include other fixtures like Shaw University, North Hills and the Angus Barn.

Monopoly: Raleigh Edition is available for purchase online and at several stores, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon. It’s also for sale at some of the places featured on the board.
As the licensed version rolls out, a similar game called Raleigh-Opoly is being sold online, produced by a company called Late for the Sky (not affiliated with Hasbro or Top Trumps USA). Raleigh-Opoly features several of the same landmarks as the new one but includes a few others, such as the State Farmers Market and the Neuse River Trail, according to photos on an Amazon listing.
Across the United States, dozens of cities have Monopoly editions. The only other North Carolina version listed on the Top Trumps USA website is a Greensboro one, which features outdoor attractions and beloved foods.
Monopoly: Raleigh Edition got the green light after the state capital was found to have a standout culture, history and residents brimming with pride.
“It’s not just pride in your schools and your professional sports and all of that, but it’s really cool to see how a lot of times pride comes from people that were born and raised in a specific area,” Hubbard told The N&O. “I got to experience firsthand that a lot of Raleigh is not from Raleigh, so it’s really unique that there is that same level of pride, even though people didn’t necessarily grow up here.”
