\u201cMost importantly, Dr. Baric\u2019s legacy also includes teaching, inspiring and mentoring dozens of students and postdocs over the decades, many of whom have gone on to their own positions of prominence in industry, government and academia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baric attended NC State University, where he earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in zoology and a doctorate in microbiology.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor these past three decades, Dr. Baric has warned that the emerging coronaviruses represent a significant and ongoing global health threat, particularly because they can jump, without warning, from animals into the human population, and they tend to spread rapidly,\u201d Baric\u2019s bio on the UNC website reads.<\/p>\n

But Baric\u2019s work with the Wuhan Institute of Virology<\/a> \u2014 located in the Chinese city where the virus that causes COVID-19 would later be discovered \u2014 and his public comments<\/a> about the virus\u2019s origin<\/a> have brought scrutiny to his research.<\/p>\n

UNC has turned over records<\/a> to state lawmakers about Baric\u2019s laboratory.<\/p>\n
