And the size of the move has caught the market&#8217;s eye.<\/p>\n<p>To understand why this matters, you have to look at how much the business has changed.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> New York Times<\/strong> isn&#8217;t really a &#8220;newspaper&#8221; company anymore. It&#8217;s a <strong>digital subscription machine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/app.tikr.com\/stock\/transcript?cid=291619&amp;tid=2633787&amp;e=2000105469&amp;ts=3733310&amp;ref=49x9sy\">company<\/a> crossed 13 million paid subscribers this past quarter, CEO Meredith Kopit Levien said at the J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media and Communications Conference on May 19, 2026. <\/p>\n<p>That puts it within striking distance of its <a href=\"https:\/\/app.tikr.com\/stock\/transcript?cid=291619&amp;tid=2633787&amp;e=2000105469&amp;ts=3733310&amp;ref=49x9sy\">15 million target<\/a> set for the end of 2027.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got 50 million to 100 million people who are coming to our sites and apps every week, much more than the 13 million and change subscribers,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/app.tikr.com\/stock\/transcript?cid=291619&amp;tid=2633787&amp;e=2000105469&amp;ts=3733310&amp;ref=49x9sy\">Kopit Levien<\/a> said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve got a huge trove of podcasts and e-mails that people watch, listen to, read on a daily basis. And we&#8217;ve got over 150 million registered users and counting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And the growth goes well beyond headlines.<\/p>\n<p>That approach has paid off. <\/p>\n<p>Valued at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/quote\/NYT\">market cap<\/a> of $12.2 billion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/quote\/NYT\" rel=\"nofollow\">NYT<\/a> stock has returned close to 600% to shareholders over the past decade, after adjusting for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/dictionary\/d\/dividend\" rel=\"nofollow\">dividends<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.in\/detail\/news-photo\/illustration-of-the-new-york-times-application-displayed-on-news-photo\/2271390165?adppopup=true\">AFP\/Getty Images)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Berkshire Hathaway (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/quote\/BRK.A\" rel=\"nofollow\">BRK.A<\/a>)(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/quote\/BRK.B\" rel=\"nofollow\">BRK.B<\/a>) tripled its position in the New York Times to 15.1 million shares, according to a new filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/16\/berkshires-new-ceo-overhauls-portfolio-dumping-a-slate-of-stocks.html\">reported by CNBC<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/berkshire-hathaway-portfolio\/\">stake is now worth<\/a> more than $1.1 billion, which means Berkshire owns roughly 9.4% of the media mogul. <\/p>\n<p>The increase came during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/personal-finance\/greg-abel-net-worth\" rel=\"nofollow\">Greg Abel<\/a>&#8216;s first three months as Berkshire&#8217;s CEO. Abel took the top job in January, ending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/tag\/warren-buffett\" rel=\"nofollow\">Warren Buffett<\/a>&#8216;s six decades running the company. <\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t assume the legendary investor is out of the picture.<\/p>\n<p>Buffett, 95, first invested in NYT in Q4 of 2025, where <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/warren-buffett-final-investment-york-112753004.html\">Berkshire bought<\/a> an initial 5.1 million shares worth $352 million. <\/p>\n<p>Given the size of the latest increase, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/16\/berkshires-new-ceo-overhauls-portfolio-dumping-a-slate-of-stocks.html\">CNBC<\/a> reported the move was almost certainly an Abel decision that Buffett either endorsed or possibly even suggested himself.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/durhammovinghub.com\/?p=1835\">Off Campus&#8217; Mika Abdalla, Ex Jake Short Address Podcast Clip After Split<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So this looks like a shared bet between the old guard and the new one.<\/p>\n<p>For longtime Buffett watchers, this is a real change in tone.<\/p>\n<p>Buffett was a decades-long investor in The Washington Post until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/tag\/jeff-bezos\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jeff Bezos<\/a> bought the paper in 2013, <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/warren-buffett-final-investment-york-112753004.html\">The Telegraph<\/a> reported. He also owned a string of local newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Then he soured on the business. He sold off those local titles in 2020, having said many of them were &#8220;toast,&#8221; The Telegraph noted.<\/p>\n<p>That word stuck with investors. It signaled Buffett thought the printed page was a dead end.<\/p>\n<p>So why circle back now?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is the same one Kopit Levien has been pitching to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/dictionary\/w\/wall-street\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wall Street<\/a>. The winners in media aren&#8217;t selling paper anymore. They&#8217;re selling habits.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/investing\/stocks\/warren-buffett-earns-a-20-dividend-yield-on-cost-with-coca-cola-ko-stock\">Related: Warren Buffett earns a 20% dividend yield-on-cost with Coca-Cola stock<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People pay for the crossword. They pay for the recipe. They pay for in-depth sports coverage of the team they love. Then they keep paying, year after year.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the kind of durable, recurring revenue Buffett has always loved in businesses like Coca-Cola and Apple.<\/p>\n<p>It also fits a broader theme. Big national titles have enjoyed a renaissance as readers shifted to digital subscriptions, The Telegraph indicated.<\/p>\n<p>The strong survive while weaker outlets fade.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times wasn&#8217;t Buffett&#8217;s only move, either. Berkshire also added new stakes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/investing\/stocks\/warren-buffetts-berkshire-opens-a-2-6b-stake-in-worlds-largest-airline\">Delta Air Lines<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/investing\/stocks\/warren-buffett-berkshire-drops-bold-55m-bet-on-struggling-retail-icon-macys\">Macy&#8217;s,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/investing\/warren-buffetts-berkshire-hathaway-doubles-down-on-google\">more than tripled<\/a> its Alphabet position. <\/p>\n<p>Based on data from <a href=\"https:\/\/app.tikr.com\/stock\/estimates?cid=291619&amp;tid=2633787&amp;tab=est&amp;ref=49x9sy\">Tikr.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/quote\/NYT\">nine analysts covering<\/a> NYT stock, five recommend &#8220;buy&#8221; and four recommend &#8220;hold&#8221;. The average <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/quote\/NYT\">NYT stock price target<\/a> is $85, indicating an upside potential of 13% from current levels. <\/p>\n<p>The takeaway is straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>Berkshire is signaling that quality media, built on subscriptions rather than ads, can be a real long-term holding again.<\/p>\n<p>For everyday investors, it&#8217;s a reminder that an &#8220;old&#8221; industry can be reborn.
