A small earthquake<\/a> was detected near a scenic North Carolina town<\/a> in the Great Smoky Mountains<\/a> Friday night, federal seismologists said. No one reported feeling it.<\/p>\n

The 2.0 magnitude earthquake registered at 8:06 p.m. about 5 miles southeast of the Haywood County town of Clyde<\/a>, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.<\/p>\n

Clyde, population 1,360<\/a>, is about 25 miles west of Asheville. Charlotte is 140 miles southeast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The quake was 3.2 miles deep, seismologists said.<\/p>\n

The quake joined a list of small quakes across North Carolina over at least the past year, most in the mountains.<\/p>\n

On April 5, two earthquakes<\/a> rattled opposite sides of the Holly Ridge Golf Links<\/a> southeast of Archdale, Randolph County, in the Piedmont Triad.<\/p>\n

On March 23, two shallow earthquakes<\/a> were reported in Dillsboro<\/a> in the mountains, and hundreds of people reported feeling the tremors, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.<\/p>\n

On Feb. 13, a 2.2 earthquake<\/a> was recorded in the Sparta area \u2014 the town where a 5.1 quake<\/a> struck in 2020.<\/p>\n

On Jan. 3, a 1.7 magnitude earthquake<\/a> registered near Newland in the Blue Ridge mountains, while a 2.1 magnitude earthquake<\/a> struck Dec. 6 about 2.5 miles southeast of Weaverville<\/a> and 9 miles south of Asheville<\/a>, according to the USGS.<\/p>\n

A 2.1 magnitude earthquake<\/a> also registered<\/a> Oct. 11 about four miles northwest of Weaverville,<\/a> seismologists said.<\/p>\n

And on Sept. 20, the town of Rosman experienced its 11th small earthquake<\/a> of the year, according to the USGS. Weaverville is 50 miles northeas<\/a>t of Rosman.<\/p>\n

Earthquakes under 3.0 are considered weak.<\/a><\/p>\n

The strongest earthquake of 2025, a 4.1 magnitude,<\/a> hit May 10 near the Tennessee-North Carolina border and was felt as far east as Charlotte, the USGS reported.<\/p>\n
