The nearly $4.4 million project was originally slated to be finished in October 2026<\/a>. Last month, the town shared on Facebook that the timeline would likely take longer<\/a> than expected due to \u201crevised electrical plans,\u201d which have since been approved.<\/p>\n

Now, the construction is expected to wrap up between early November and early January, according to an email the town shared with The News & Observer on Friday, June 12.<\/p>\n

For months, parts of Salem Street<\/a> have been reduced to one-way or local car traffic. Sidewalks are open on both sides of the street throughout the project, according to the town\u2019s website and Facebook page.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecognizing the potential impact of construction, one of the key messages of our communications around the Salem Streetscape is that downtown is fully open for business throughout construction. Prior to construction, we worked with downtown stakeholders to get feedback about the types of communications would help them reach their customers,\u201d Stacie Galloway, communications director for the town, told The N&O via email, adding that the town has \u201cused all communications tactics at our disposal to encourage our residents to \u2018love local.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBehind every storefront is someone who took a risk, invested in our community, and believed in downtown Apex<\/a>,\u201d Mayor Jacques Gilbert wrote Tuesday, June 9 in a Facebook post. \u201cMany are facing significant economic challenges right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The used bookstore Alleyway Bookstore announced its closure June 6, citing rising costs<\/a> and changes to foot traffic during the construction project outside its building, The News & Observer previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n
