Construction work that started in downtown Apex in February is behind schedule. The project is now expected to wrap up in December, and it\u2019s affecting businesses and events alike.<\/p>\n

That includes the Fourth of July party that normally brings together thousands of people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe typically have the Olde Fashioned Fourth of July … this year, we\u2019ve got to make some pivots,\u201d said Apex Mayor Jacques Gilbert.<\/p>\n

The block party downtown has been canceled<\/u><\/a>. Some of the events are being moved to nearby Hunter Street Park.<\/p>\n

The Town of Apex<\/u><\/a> is spending about $4 million on a streetscape project in the heart of downtown.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, nearby business owners are struggling to push through, and one is closing its doors.<\/p>\n

Nick Bryant owns Apex Gallery and Framing, which sits across the street from where crews are setting the foundation for new sidewalks.<\/p>\n

A sign has been posted, \u201cbusiness still open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bryant said foot traffic has fluctuated, and he\u2019s looking forward to the work being finished.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sooner the better, but I know most people are working as diligently as they can to get it done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Residents would also like the quaint town to return to normal.<\/p>\n

\u201c(It\u2019s) very hard to drive, plus the noise,\u201d said Apex resident Roberto Navarra.<\/p>\n

The shop Alleyway Bookstore recently announced it was closing its doors. It primarily cited a 64% rent increase, but added that the hike comes as construction is \u201caffecting our daily customer traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Only one lane of traffic is open, and street parking in the construction zone is closed.<\/p>\n

The town is widening sidewalks in the streetscape project to allow for more outdoor dining. Decorative lighting and outdoor furniture will be added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do have a vision, and we\u2019re going to maintain our focus on that vision, understanding there\u2019s going to be bumps along the way,\u201d said Gilbert. \u201cLet\u2019s get our business owners through this and let\u2019s work on this together as a community.\u201d<\/p>\n
