It was a busy day at the legislature Wednesday as House Republicans quickly overrode a series of vetoes from Democratic Gov. Josh Stein<\/b><\/a> that had been sitting on the calendar for nearly a year.<\/p>\n

Until now, Republicans had lacked the votes to do so. But two absences from key lawmakers, Democratic Rep. Shelly Willingham<\/b> and now-unaffiliated Rep. Carla Cunningham<\/b>, gave Republicans the numbers they needed to push the overrides through.<\/p>\n

The bills in question broadly ban diversity, equity and inclusion practices in state government and schools and require the state to further cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n

One of those bills, the one dealing with DEI in government, must go to the Senate for a final vote. The rest are now law.<\/p>\n
