June marks Pride Month, a time to celebrate and commemorate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer people and their history.<\/p>\n

Raleigh\u2019s first Gay Pride march was held Saturday, June 25, 1988, according to photos from The News & Observer archives.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople need to know we are their neighbors,\u201d said P. Susan Mitchell, who helped organize the event, at the time. \u201cSome of us are their best friends. Some of us are their lawyers. Some of us \u2014 like me \u2014 are their nurses. We\u2019re all out there, and we\u2019ve always been out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The participants, numbering over 2,000, gathered at NC State\u2019s Memorial Bell Tower and marched down Hillsborough Street to Capitol Square.<\/p>\n

Then-Raleigh City Council Member Mary Watson Nooe attended the march, saying, \u201cI wanted to show that I am an ally.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt like that was a good way to do that,\u201d Nooe said. \u201cWe\u2019re all diminished by discrimination, and if we recognize the things we do together and do together well, then we can build a better society.\u201d<\/p>\n
