Yonnie, the sweet-toothed, rambunctious mama black bear<\/a> who loved strawberry jelly, was euthanized this week because of debilitating, age-related ailments, her handlers at Grandfather Mountain<\/a> said Friday. She was 27.<\/p>\n

Beloved Yonnie had trouble standing and walking because of severe arthritis, officials with the not-for-profit nature park in the North Carolina mountains said in a news release.<\/p>\n

Born in a facility out West, Yonnie was about 3 months old when she and her companion bear, Kodiak, were flown to Charlotte to meet their new keepers, officials said.<\/p>\n

She gave birth to eight cubs and \u201cwas an excellent mother who loved her babies immensely and could be seen playing games with them regularly,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n

Yonnie\u2019s name was short for Yonahlossee, the Cherokee word for \u201ctrail of the black bear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yonnie also was \u201coutspoken and full of attitude,\u201d yet \u201csensitive and emotional with uniquely expressive eyes,\u201d officials wrote. In her later years, she was \u201ccalm and sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being a bear, she was whiny when she wanted more food. She also favored berries and peaches, her handlers said.<\/p>\n

And she loved hanging out with Kodiak \u2014 whether \u201cexploring, sunbathing, tree-lounging or splashing around in the pond.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her youth, she\u2019d pick on other bears and then hide behind Kodiak. He also was 27 when he died this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cYonnie will always be remembered for her enthusiasm and the love she showed her cubs,\u201d Christie Tipton, animal habitat curator for the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout her long life, she was always a spirited bear, and her impact will not be forgotten,\u201d Tipton said.<\/p>\n
