I\u2019m still feeling that Stanley Cup high.<\/p>\n

Last Saturday, I joined at least 190,000 people<\/a> shoulder to shoulder in downtown Raleigh for an epic Carolina Hurricanes\u2019 victory celebration. It was crowded. It took 10 minutes to move just a few feet. And yet, it was glorious. If you\u2019ve lived in North Carolina for any length of time, you know a crowd this size in Raleigh was unprecedented.<\/p>\n

The Cup then showed up all over Raleigh, including a triumphant visit to the state Legislature.<\/a><\/p>\n

But now it\u2019s back to, sigh, non-hockey news.<\/p>\n

Good morning. I\u2019m Jessica Banov, an editor at The News & Observer. This is the North Carolina Observer, where we look back at highlights from The N&O and The Charlotte Observer from the past week.<\/p>\n

Saleh Ahmad spent much of the first five of his eight years in the hospital. He was born with a heart condition and received a heart transplant at age 5. As a result, he has developed physically much slower than other children his age. His family has struggled to get him certain additional services and objected to a proposed transfer. Following a lawsuit, the Wake County school district is paying the family over $190,000.<\/p>\n

As N&O education reporter writes, it\u2019s part of more than $2 million in special-education settlements approved in the past year-and-a-half. More than a story about a lawsuit settlement, it\u2019s a story about one family\u2019s fight for their kid at a time when resources are getting cut for all children.<\/a><\/p>\n

That\u2019s Caleb Wilson<\/b>, the former UNC basketball player who was selected by the Chicago Bulls No. 4 in the NBA Draft. The comparisons to Michael Jordan were immediate, and Wilson is ready for it. He said he\u2019s \u201chungry\u201d to succeed, reports The N&O\u2019s Kamran Nia.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Stanley Cup was the star during a Carolina Hurricanes visit to the North Carolina State Legislature<\/a>. Captain Jordan Staal was accompanied by Jordan Martinook and head coach Rod Brind\u2019Amour. N&O photo intern Ben Pennington captured this amazing photo.<\/p>\n
