\u201cI don\u2019t think I heard a single thing happening inside,\u201d Olson told The N&O. \u201cI sat on the street from 1 to 3 a.m. There had to be kids there who were 13 to 14 fighting in the streets. Kids looking for fights.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others, such as longtime Glenwood restaurateur Carey Kidd, called Saturday night-Sunday morning an escalation of problems left untouched too long \u2014 in some cases by City Hall.<\/p>\n

Raleigh police are understaffed and underpaid, he said. Too many bars and clubs get ABC permits without vetting. Too few of them hire promoters to watch who comes in.<\/p>\n

Nobody enforces a dress code, Kidd continued, or in some cases, checks IDs at the door. Affordable parking is hard to find. Private security helped on Fayetteville Street downtown, then went away.<\/p>\n

The violence on the Fourth of July happened outside the bars, he said, and it looked far worse than normal. Still, he said, the system used to work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is where things have kind of escalated,\u201d said Kidd, who owns the Dirty V vegan restaurant. \u201cIt\u2019s never been this bad. This kind of shows where society is going. The lack of respect is what\u2019s happening. There\u2019s no structure anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
