UNC-Chapel Hill chancellor Lee Roberts<\/b> celebrated the news in a video message<\/a>. UNC System President Peter Hans<\/b> made a grateful statement: \u201cNorth Carolina\u2019s public universities are growing along with our state, serving more students than ever,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI want to thank our lawmakers for a budget that keeps our universities strong, fiscally sound, and focused on serving North Carolina. At a time when other higher education systems across the country are cutting back, the UNC System is reaching more students, graduating more of them on time, and meeting the workforce needs of a fast-growing state.\u201d<\/p>\n

When prolific marine scientist Joel Fodrie<\/b> left his job<\/a> as director of UNC\u2019s coastal lab in June for the same job at Duke, it left an uncomfortable vacuum at UNC\u2019s lab. One professor described the departure as a \u201cgreat loss,\u201d and others expressed anxiety about the immediate future of the lab.<\/p>\n

Now, the lab has named an interim director: professor Janet Nye<\/b>. She runs the Nye Lab<\/a> at UNC, where she and her students research fisheries, oceanography and ecology.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re a resilient marine lab,\u201d Nye told me last month. \u201cAnd we have lots of excellent faculty still here.\u201d<\/p>\n
