Kevin Guskiewicz won\u2019t be joining Clemson after all.<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s incoming university president \u2014 who was formally hired on May 27<\/a> and was expected to start at Clemson in August \u2014 is staying put in his role as Michigan State University\u2019s president, The State has confirmed.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a stunning pivot for Clemson and Guskiewicz just over a month after his hiring. The hiring marked a return to the Carolinas for Guskiewicz, who was chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill from 2019-24<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Guskiewicz was on Clemson\u2019s campus and participating in university board of trustees meetings two weeks ago, and he said in his introductory news conference that he and his family hoped to be at Clemson for \u201cmany, many years.\u201d<\/p>\n

But in a message sent to campus and later shared on social media<\/a>, Clemson said its board of trustees was informed Monday that Guskiewicz \u201chas chosen to remain at Michigan State University<\/a> for personal reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c(Our) national search had a robust pool of candidates, and the Board will be meeting soon to determine next steps,\u201d Clemson wrote in an email to campus.<\/p>\n

Guskiewicz is returning to Michigan State and signing a five-year contract extension after a push from Spartans men\u2019s basketball coach Tom Izzo, MSU\u2019s board of trustees members and other top university leaders to retain the well-liked president,<\/a> according to multiple media outlets covering MSU.<\/p>\n

When he was hired at Clemson, Guskiewicz hinted at dysfunction among MSU\u2019s board of trustees as a top reason for his decision to leave the Big Ten school.<\/p>\n

It was an \u201cunsustainable situation,\u201d<\/a> he wrote in a message to MSU.<\/p>\n

Michigan State student and faculty groups started a \u201cWe (Heart) Kevin G\u201d campaign to shower their supposed outgoing president with posters and notes of thanks. Izzo, Michigan State\u2019s legendary basketball coach, also raved about Guskiewicz while blasting the university\u2019s lack of stability and recent leadership churn<\/a> at positions like president and athletic director.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m sick of it,\u201d Izzo said.<\/p>\n

In a letter shared on MSU\u2019s website Monday, Guskiewicz indicated he\u2019d had \u201cproductive conversations\u201d with university leadership<\/a> about the \u201cgovernance challenges I previously shared,\u201d specifically involving a university code of ethics and some trustees\u2019 refusal to abide by it<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am grateful for the patience the board extended as I worked through this deeply personal decision, and for the confidence and encouragement I received from members of the board, our leadership team, our distinguished faculty and so many alumni, donors, students, staff and friends of the university,\u201d Guskiewciz wrote.<\/p>\n

Notably, Guskiewicz\u2019s contract extension with Michigan State reportedly includes an annual base salary of $1 million \u2014 less than the $1.216 million base salary he was set to make at Clemson in 2027. It\u2019s another hint his decision to remain at MSU (and leave for Clemson in the first place) wasn\u2019t financially motivated.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Amy and I reflected on the possibility of leaving, we kept returning to one simple truth: we love this university,\u201d Guskiewicz wrote of he and his wife.<\/p>\n

Guskiewicz, 60, was set to replace Jim Clements<\/a>, who retired as Clemson\u2019s president in December after 12 years. He became MSU\u2019s president in 2024 after spending almost 30 years at UNC, first as a professor, then as dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and then chancellor.<\/p>\n

Clemson board chairwoman Kim Wilkerson<\/a> called Guskiewicz \u201can outstanding leader with an impressive record at every institution he has served.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guskiewicz was also considered to have a sharp athletics mind and someone who could be an asset for Clemson athletics. During his introductory comments to the university\u2019s board of trustees, he name-dropped Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Guskiewicz traveled from Michigan to Upstate South Carolina late last month to participate in the Clemson board of trustees\u2019 summer quarterly meeting from June 24-27. During that campus visit, he sported an orange tie, posed for photos and met with student and faculty groups, per the Post & Courier<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Less than two weeks later, he informed Clemson he was turning down the job.<\/p>\n

Clemson will resume its presidential search soon, the university said in a statement Monday. Provost Bob Jones<\/a> had been serving as interim president after Clements\u2019 December retirement and could resume those duties.<\/p>\n

Clemson will once again be searching for only its third president this century. Clements\u2019 predecessor, Jim Barker<\/a>, spent 15 years as president from 1999-2013.<\/p>\n
