The North Carolina Auditor\u2019s Office has reassigned Dallas Woodhouse, its controversial elections liaison, to a new role after a series of controversies involving his influence on early voting plans.<\/p>\n

Woodhouse, who led the state GOP from 2015 to 2019, was hired into the new role last year<\/a> with a salary of $110,000 after Auditor Dave Boliek gained control over appointments to election boards.<\/p>\n

His position, which had never existed when the governor had control over election boards, was intended to act as a liaison with the 100 county election chairs across the state and \u201censure election integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, as local boards prepared for the midterms, news of Woodhouse\u2019s involvement in early voting plans drew scrutiny.<\/p>\n

Last month, Republican officials in Jackson County said they had been pressured by the GOP and the auditor\u2019s office to reject an early voting site on Western Carolina University\u2019s campus. In texts obtained by NC Local<\/a>, Woodhouse told the chair \u201cdon\u2019t let them have a vote\u201d about the plan.<\/p>\n

And in Pasquotank County, Woodhouse told the board chair to \u201cdrop Sunday,\u201d according to a text message obtained by<\/a> Common Cause NC<\/a><\/u>, a voting rights group.<\/p>\n

Woodhouse\u2019s reassignment was announced last week in an email to the board chairs, which The News & Observer has obtained. It does not state why he has been transferred or what his new role will be.<\/p>\n

Randy Brechbiel, a spokesperson for the auditor\u2019s office, said the elections liaison positions has been discontinued.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that we are more than a year past appointments, and board chairs have settled into their roles having worked through a municipal election, primary election, and most of the local boards have passed early voting plans for the general election, the Auditor\u2019s Office has discontinued the elections liaison role,\u201d he said. \u201cThe elections liaison was established because the Auditor\u2019s Office gained new responsibilities. The position was not meant to be permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brechbiel said Woodhouse\u2019s new position will be \u201cworking on strategic initiatives that relate to constituent services and communications.\u201d<\/p>\n
