Woodard said after firing shots at the courthouse, Mustafa ran down several blocks before encountering police officers, with the two groups exchanging gunfire. A Wilson County sheriff\u2019s deputy \u2014 who was wearing body armor \u2014 and a Wilson police officer were both hit but received only minor injuries and are in stable condition.<\/p>\n

The incident in downtown Wilson marks the second shooting outside a county courthouse that the Triangle region has seen in recent months. In May, two attorneys were seriously injured<\/a> outside the Wake County Courthouse in downtown Raleigh after a woman involved in their case retrieved a handgun in her car and opened fire on them.<\/p>\n

Gwendolyn White, 57, faces two counts of attempted murder in connection with the shooting.<\/p>\n

Woodard described Monday\u2019s shooting as an \u201cisolated incident\u201d and said Wilson\u2019s courthouse is \u201cvery safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn incidents like this, how do you prevent them? You prevent them by making sure, one, we have a presence as we do in our courthouse,\u201d Woodard said. \u201cWe make sure that none of that stuff that goes on outside comes inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson County District Attorney Jeffrey Marsigli said additional charges will likely follow for the shootings that occurred after Mustafa fled the courthouse.<\/p>\n
