\u201cBoth of those institutions and the conference office put together the entire ACC schedule based on some of the teams that were playing in Week 0,\u201d Phillips said, also referencing North Carolina\u2019s game in Ireland. \u201cThat would have been a real disadvantage to those student-athletes. I\u2019m very pleased at how the NCAA took that information and then decided that it could stay at Week 0.\u201d<\/p>\n

N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said in December that the trip would be a great opportunity for the team. On Wednesday, junior quarterback CJ Bailey and running back Duke Scott acknowledged it would have been a privilege to have gone while also saying they\u2019re OK with the change.<\/p>\n

I forget what day it was, but it was after a practice,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cCoach Doeren brought up the team \u2014 he had learned two hours before that it was canceled \u2014 and he told us we can\u2019t go to Brazil no more. The whole team was like, \u2018So what? Now what?\u2019 We\u2019re always hyped. Let\u2019s play in Virginia. Let\u2019s do it. That didn\u2019t faze us to not go to Brazil.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Brazil is off the table, Phillips said the ACC will continue to pursue international opportunities as it seeks to broaden not only the conference\u2019s reach, but also college football\u2019s. The Holiday Bowl organizers considered playing in Saudi Arabia. Pitt will face Wisconsin in Ireland next year.<\/p>\n

For now, the Wolfpack and Cavaliers will play in Charlottesville as expected when the teams scheduled the series. Scott Stadium is less than four hours from Raleigh, giving more fans an opportunity to attend. Plus, Bailey admits, he\u2019s not a fan of long-haul flights.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Our fans) can\u2019t wait for football to start,\u201d Doeren said. \u201cOur crowd is antsy and excited that we\u2019re playing in Virginia instead of Brazil because they get to be a part of it now and go tailgate.\u201d<\/p>\n
