{"id":4804,"date":"2026-07-17T07:34:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T07:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/durhammovinghub.com\/?p=4804"},"modified":"2026-07-17T07:34:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T07:34:44","slug":"europe-hands-google-a-huge-loss-in-ai-search-engine-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/durhammovinghub.com\/?p=4804","title":{"rendered":"Europe hands Google a huge loss in AI search engine battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;ve noticed Google Search getting worse over the past few years, you&#8217;re not the only one. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/durhammovinghub.com\/?p=4802\">Kim Kardashian and Lewis Hamilton Spend Time Together on Cozy Lake Getaway<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It has gotten so bad that recently <a href=\"https:\/\/institute.commonsensemedia.org\/risk-assessments\/google-search\">Common Sense Media<\/a>, a nonprofit focused on youth and technology, advised elementary school educators to ban their students from using Google search at all because it can solve homework problems for students while also providing inaccurate answers to search queries.<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20260519-google-tackles-attempts-to-hack-its-ai-results\">investigation by the BBC<\/a> showed how easy it was to manipulate the AI-powered version of its search engine, with one researcher admitting, &#8220;I tricked ChatGPT and Google into telling the world I&#8217;m a world -champion competitive hot-dog eater.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Experts the BBC talked to say that this type of manipulation is &#8220;happening on a <a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/best-lists-research\/\">sweeping and systemic level<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So what can users do to combat this besides being extra vigilant when using Google search? <\/p>\n<p>But regulators in the European Union are betting that increased competition will help Google get better. <\/p>\n<p>This week, the European Commission, which is the political bloc&#8217;s competition regulator, ruled that Google will have to share its Search data.<\/p>\n<p>These requirements follow the recent passage of the Digital Markets Act. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thanks to these measures, we hope to see emerging alternatives to Google Search and Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow\">AI<\/a> services, such as Gemini, and that users in the EU can enjoy greater choice of services,&#8221; said Henna Virkkunen, the Commission&#8217;s executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy. <\/p>\n<p>AI chatbots offering search functionalities, like those from ChatGPT and Claude, are eligible to receive shared data from Google. Subject to anonymisation, &#8220;Google should share the same data that it collects to optimize its own search services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Google pushed back on the decision, saying that &#8220;today&#8217;s decisions risk undermining vital privacy and security guardrails for millions of Europeans,&#8221; according to an email from its lawyer Kent Walker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/google-required-open-up-ai-search-engine-rivals-under-eu-mandated-changes-2026-07-16\/\">viewed by Reuters<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We \u200bhave repeatedly offered solutions to safeguard users while satisfying the DMA&#8217;s goals, but these rulings \u200bdiscount extensive evidence of user harm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/durhammovinghub.com\/?p=4800\">Kim Kardashian Explains Lake Vacation Post Amid Grandmother&#8217;s Death<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the EU regulators see things differently. <\/p>\n<p>They say &#8220;data sharing is crucial for the development and optimization of third-party search engines. It helps to create a more level playing field with Google Search, and fosters innovative search services, which include privacy-focused alternatives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Google is required to implement the new guidelines and start sharing search data with eligible parties starting in January 2027. <\/p>\n<p>Last year, U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) addressed a letter, co-signed by Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI), to EU antitrust czar Teresa Ribera, asking her to clarify the political bloc&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_3433\">Digital Markets Act<\/a> while stating their belief that the regulations target American companies. <\/p>\n<p>The DMA allows the EU to levy fines of up to 10% of a company&#8217;s global annual revenue, and U.S. politicians are unhappy about this. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These severe fines appear to have two goals: to compel businesses to follow European standards worldwide, and as a European tax on American companies,&#8221; Jordan said in the letter, which was viewed by Reuters. <\/p>\n<p>Apple  (<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/AAPL\"><strong>AAPL<\/strong><\/a>)  received the ignominious honor of becoming the first company to be sanctioned under the DMA on Nov. 5.
