Seel watched the videos repeatedly. She was captivated by the story of the self-taught sculptor who had created monuments for the graves of Elizabeth Edwards, the late wife of former U.S. senator and presidential candidate John Edwards, and for former UNC basketball coach Dean Smith, Seel said.<\/p>\n

He soon began pushing to replace the loan with a partnership, Seel said. She did not want to become his partner in transforming the castle into a wedding venue, but by then, she testified, she was trying to protect the money she had already spent.<\/p>\n

Mihaly presented himself as a licensed and insured contractor, a professional sculptor and financially stable partner who could perform nearly all the work, Seel contended. She later found out that he had let his contractor license lapse. He also oversold his construction skills and the materials he said he had, she testified.<\/p>\n

Much of the materials Mihaly said he already had was scattered across the castle property or stored at his former partner\u2019s and mother\u2019s homes, Seel testified. Some of it had been exposed to the weather for decades and was covered in mold.<\/p>\n

Seel paid for exterior stone, marble flooring, a copper tub, windows, tools, plywood, mortar and workers, she testified. She coordinated shipments from China and purchased sanders, planers and chainsaws.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert would say, \u2018Oh, I forgot to mention I don\u2019t have this\u2019 or \u2018We need this,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She also started to question Mihaly\u2019s artistic skills, contending she found information showing that sculptures he had sold for thousands of dollars to his clients, portraying them as hand-carved, were actually manufactured in China.<\/p>\n

Mihaly denies that, saying it isn\u2019t unusual for artists to use multiple tools to create their artistic vision.<\/p>\n

By October 2023, they had signed a \u201cbasic castle understanding\u201d agreement in which they both loaned each other money. The agreement called for transferring the castle and surrounding land to a company they would jointly own. They also signed a promissory note under which Seel would lend Mihaly and the company $250,000 to transform the castle into an event venue.
