Tucker Street Diner closed in Downtown Raleigh\u2019s Smoky Hollow development, holding its last service Sunday, July 19. The diner was owned by James and Michelle Park, who also own the Peak City Diner in Apex and The Shiny Diner in Cary.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Tucker Street Diner) was something we believed in, but unfortunately the foot traffic wasn\u2019t consistent,\u201d James Park said in a phone interview. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t really anyone\u2019s fault. (Property owner) Kane and Smoky Hollow did everything they could for us to help us out, but we just didn\u2019t see a path forward with operating costs and sales where they were. But this allows us to focus on our other two diners.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tucker Street Diner opened in early 2025, joining Smoky Hollow\u2019s roster of restaurants, including Madre and Midwood Smokehouse.<\/p>\n

Park said the diner was developed in a post-COVID glow, where diners were eager to get back to dining out. More recently though, amid rising costs and lower consumer spending, the diner struggled to gain ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s coming back to earth,\u201d Park said. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen it dip at our other locations, but this one just never developed the food traffic and the sales volume.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a checkered tile floor, all-day breakfast and a dining room blending modern touches and diner staples, Tucker Street seemed poised to build on a trend of nostalgia in restaurants.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re seeing that sentiment, especially at Shiny Diner,\u201d Park said. \u201cI think people, with technology and AI, are thinking more and more about what\u2019s real and what\u2019s not and there\u2019s a desire to go back to simpler times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Tucker Street is the third turnover in Smoky Hollow in four years, following J. Lights Cafe<\/a> and New Anthem Brewing\u2019s<\/a> Raleigh taproom.<\/p>\n

\u201cSmoky Hollow is still relatively new and building a clientele,\u201d Park said. \u201cWe\u2019re grateful to Kane for everything they\u2019ve done for us. We have no regrets.\u201d<\/p>\n
