The show, produced by global drone company Skyworx, replaces the fireworks display that has traditionally been the highlight of Chapel Hill’s July Fourth celebrations.
Town officials decided to do the drone show at the end of last year, after a 2024 survey asked residents to rank their preferences among a fireworks show, a drone show, no celebration or an “other” option.
The survey drew responses from 762 Chapel Hill-Carrboro residents and nearby community members. About 83% of respondents ranked drones as their first or second choice, compared to 77% for fireworks.
The change also supports the town’s broader sustainability goals, like Chapel Hill’s Climate Action Plan, which outlines strategies to reduce carbon emissions and address the effects of climate change.

“Fireworks are not as environmentally friendly as drones, and it does create a quieter and more accessible viewing experience for our community members,” said Darien Cropper, Chapel Hill’s marketing and communications coordinator for Community Arts and Culture.
Officials are encouraging residents to attend professional displays like the drone show this year instead of setting off fireworks at home because of the hot, dry conditions and an increased fire risk from traditional fireworks.
The free event begins at 7 p.m., with the drone show scheduled for 9:20 p.m.
There is no general parking at Chapel Hill High School, Smith Middle School or Seawell Elementary School, according to the Town of Chapel Hill website. Instead, attendees should park at the Rosemary Parking Deck, UNC’s RR Lot or the Eubanks Park & Ride Lot and take the town’s free shuttle service.
The town also encourages attendees to bring water, blankets, chairs, coolers and picnic supplies, since seating will not be provided.
