Walmart and its membership club, Sam’s Club, are lowering prices on items such as meat, name-brand sodas and chips, and ice cream — all products you’d expect to find at backyard get-togethers and pool parties over the next few months.
Some of the items have only been marked down by less than a dollar. But others, such as packages of Coca-Cola and Dr Pepper, now cost several dollars less.
But how do these new prices compare across stores?
To find out, The N&O checked prices of the same or similar items at Aldi, Lidl, Food Lion and Target, the four grocery stores which, in addition to Walmart, charged the lowest prices in our 2024 grocery price check.
Here’s what we found.

Walmart is slashing prices of some name-brand sodas and chips that Lidl, Target and Food Lion also sell.
For almost every item, Walmart’s “Rollbacks” beat the prices at other stores. But for one item, an 8-ounce bag of Lay’s Classic potato chips, Lidl and Walmart charge the same price: $2.50.

If you’re shopping for 24-count packages of Coca-Cola or Pepsi sodas, or an 18-count variety pack of Frito-Lay chips, Walmart has better deals compared to the other stores we visited.
While availability varied, Food Lion, Aldi, Target and Lidl each carried at least one store-brand item equivalent to a product Walmart and Sam’s Club highlighted in their announcement about lowering prices.
All of the stores sell 48-ounce tubs of ice cream under their own house labels, and Aldi just barely has the best price. At $2.49, its Sundae Shoppe is one cent cheaper than Walmart’s Great Value.
Another item priced similarly across stores was a 200-count package of paper plates. Walmart’s price, $8.97, is only a couple of cents less than Target’s.
Many stores sell chicken wings, but the $2 per pound price at Sam’s Club is the cheapest. On the expensive end of the stores we visited, Food Lion’s chicken wings are $3.99 per pound, nearly double the price at Sam’s Club.
