Monya Ramen opened this week in North Raleigh, right next door to sister restaurant Sushi Mon. The new ramen shop is led by Sushi Mon chef and co-owner Chris Lee.

Monya held its official grand opening Sunday, July 12, following a soft opening where bowls of ramen were sold for $1 each. The restaurant sold 100 bowls for lunch and dinner Friday and Saturday for a total of 400 $1 bowls of ramen, drawing long lines of diners.

Sushi Mon opened in 2018 near NC State, but later moved to the Glenwood Place development just inside the Beltline in 2021. Since its opening, Sushi Mon has been one of the Triangle’s most popular sushi bars. In a 2019 review, former News & Observer dining critic Greg Cox awarded Sushi Mon three and a half stars out of five, praising the restaurant’s ability to meet ambitious expectations.

Opening Monya just steps away from Sushi Mon, Lee has built a new ramen bar and izakaya, playing on two comforting Japanese traditions.

Monya serves a pared down menu with three ramen options: the chicken-based tori, the pork-based tonkotsu and a vegetarian bowl. Each ramen is $18. Small plates include chicken karaage, gyoza, steamed pork buns and crispy shrimp.

Monya Ramen is open daily for lunch and dinner at 3800 Glenwood Ave #110 in Raleigh.
