It happened shortly after noon Wednesday in Henderson, and a traffic stop ended with the driver critically wounded, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office said in a July 15 news release.
Investigators believe the man meant to do the woman harm, but a motive has not been released.
“The Warren County Sheriff’s Office’s 911 Center received a call from a young lady (who) was afraid because she was being followed by another vehicle occupied by an unknown male, and had been since leaving Walmart,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Deputies arrived to the caller’s location … While officers were exiting their vehicles to approach the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect’s vehicle suddenly accelerated and rammed the back of the caller’s vehicle.”

Deputies approached the suspect’s vehicle and found a man slumped over in the front seat, with “a gun in his right hand,” the sheriff’s office said.
“It appeared that the suspect suffered a gun shot wound to the head … The male still had a pulse and was taken from the scene by ambulance, to seek emergency medical attention,” the sheriff’s office said.
“While this matter is still under investigation, we believe the immediate response and action of our officers may have saved the life of this young lady.”
Details of the suspect’s condition have not been released.
Henderson is about a 45-mile drive northeast from downtown Raleigh.
