After winning the Stanley Cup, Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal has been given a one-year contract extension that could pay as much as $10 million.

The Hurricanes announced late Tuesday night that Staal, 38, would receive an extension through the 2027-28 season. Staal will be paid a base salary of $900,000, plus a $4 million signing bonus, and also can earn as much as $5.1 million in performance bonuses.
The announcement came just before the start of training camp for the Cup champions, who came away with the franchise’s second Stanley Cup title. Staal was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP as the Canes went 19-3 in the playoff march.
Staal began the 2026 playoffs by accepting the challenge of then-Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk, dropping the gloves to fight and winning it. He ended the playoffs with six goals in the Stanley Cup Final as the Canes finished off the Vegas Golden Knights in six games to win the Cup.
“He’s the bedrock of the culture we’ve established in this organization,” general manager Eric Tulsky said in announcing the signing.

Staal was a Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009. Traded to Carolina in June 2012 – on his wedding day, no less – he was named the Canes captain on Sept. 29, 2019, after briefly serving as the team co-captain with Justin Faulk under previous coach Bill Peters.
Rod Brind’Amour, named head coach in 2018, made Justin Williams his captain and then turned to Staal after Williams retired.
Staal signed a four-year contract extension in 2023. While some wondeed if he might retire if the Canes won a Cup, he quicky said after the Cup run that he intended to play out his contract. Now, he has another year.
