A large fire at a Clayton home early Monday morning left a man and one of his dogs dead, according to local authorities.

Firefighters responded to a home on Guy Road at about 1 a.m. Monday where a “heavy” blaze could be seen from the front and side windows of a single-story residence, according to a spokesperson for the town of Garner. Firefighters found a man and two dogs inside.
The man was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office said Monday afternoon. One dog was pronounced dead at the scene and the other dog is now in the care of Wake County Animal Control.

An investigation remains ongoing, according to the Sheriff’s Office, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner working to determine the cause of the man’s death and the Fire Marshal’s Office working to determine the cause of the blaze.
