An early morning fire killed five people in a house in south Raleigh. H. O Jordan, a cement contractor, his wife, Elizabeth, their two children, Lisa and Russell and the wife’s mother, Mary Bailey died. Swift Creek fire chief, L. D. Warner believed the fire started due to lightning that hit the garage where fire examiners found fused electrical wiring. A sixth member of the family survived and was treated for minor injuries and shock.
An Orange County farmer was found gored by an enraged bull. There were no witnesses to the incident until Henry C. Hogan’s mangled body was found outside the stable door with the bloody-horned animal standing over him around 6:30 a.m.
The surrounding walls were splattered with blood and wooden planks had been knocked loose by the fight. The bull had been Hogan’s property for three years before the death had occurred.
