N.C. State football opened the season with high hopes and a Week 0 matchup against the Virginia Cavaliers at Scott Stadium in a game that was originally scheduled to be played in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but was moved after the organizer canceled. The hopes quickly faded as QB CJ Bailey threw for only 84 yards as Virginia’s defense shut down the Wolfpack’s offense in a lopsided ACC game.

The Wolfpack was battered on both sides of the ball in the 34-8 loss. Bailey’s passes came under heavy pressure, his few attempts at running the football rarely produced needed yardage. N.C. State reached the red zone once, but Bailey’s rush resulted in a fumble.
