One of the country’s best known sandwich chains is closing one of the Triangle’s most prominent locations.

Sandwich giant Panera will shut down its North Hills location on Sept. 15. The shop at 4421 Six Forks Road announced the closing with a sign taped to the restaurant’s front door.
“This cafe is closing its doors,” the sign said. “Thank you for all of your support over the past 12 years!”
After the closing there will be 27 Panera locations in the Triangle, making the brand one of the Triangle’s biggest sandwich chains, popular for a rich mac and cheese and made-to-order deli options.

As one of the Triangle’s biggest shopping and nightlife destinations, North Hills remains a major dining district, attracting many buzzy new restaurants, like Benchwarmers Bagels, Standard Beer + Food and a future Jubala coffee shop. But it’s also seen a string of recent closings, including CO and the short-lived wine bar Foxcroft, as well as a temporarily shuttered Chick-Fil-A.
On the closing sign, the Panera points out there are nearby locations at 6201 Glenwood Ave. and 2410 Landmark Dr. near Lake Boone Trail.
