A Spring Hope man is facing multiple charges, accused of fleeing the scene of a fatal crash early Saturday that left a 10-year-old dead.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to the single-vehicle collision around 1:15 a.m. on N.C. 96 near Doyle Road. Investigators say Cornell Jermaine Deans, 40, was driving on the highway in a 2017 Fords Escape SUV with four passengers when he crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the roadway, and crashed into a tree.
Deans allegedly fled the wreck on foot, leaving the four injured passengers inside the SUV.
Miking Daniel of Rocky Mount died from his injuries, according to the State Highway Patrol. Three others — Fe’Nesia Daniel, 35, Christopher Daniel, 7, and Onyx Daniel, 4 — were taken to WakeMed with serious injuries.
The Wake County Sheriff’s Office assisted the State Highway Patrol to locate Deans later Saturday morning. He was taken to WakeMed for treatment before being booked into the Wake Detention Center, where is he being held without bond.

Deans has been charged with three counts of felony hit-and-run involving serious injury, two counts of misdemeanor child abuse, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, left of center, and two counts of failure to secure a passenger under 16.
In addition to the crash-related offenses, Deans was served with outstanding warrants out of Nash County for felony possession of heroin and misdemeanor drug paraphernalia.
The Highway Patrol said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
