Even when you take precautions, possessions can be lost or damaged. And that’s not even factoring in fraudsters.
I spoke with Saige Heigel, communications specialist with BBB of Eastern Carolinas, to learn how to choose a moving company.
Reputable moving companies should be able to show you proof of insurance and a license, Heigel said.
The North Carolina Utilities Commission certifies moving companies in the state, and you can also check the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website to find a list of registered interstate movers.
You can also search accredited businesses on websites such as the BBB or the North Carolina Movers Association.

The costs of moving depend on several factors, including how much stuff you have. But according to U.S. News & World Report, the average cost of a long-distance interstate move for a three-bedroom home is about $7,500. A short-distance move between two states costs about $4,400.
Customers should get quotes from more than one company, Heigel said. A good rule of thumb is at least three movers.
“It’s really important to be able to compare prices to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible,” Heigel said.
Moving companies should provide estimates in writing, based on detailed questions about what you need to move. If the companies only ask for general information, they won’t be able to give you a proper estimate, Heigel said.
You may be able to save money by moving as much as you can, including valuable items such as jewelry, by yourself.
In addition to the cost estimate, ask the companies when they will pick up your belongings and when they will arrive at your new home.
Also ask how they will transport your things. Some companies may just rent a moving van.
Once you choose a moving company, find out when payment is due and how the company accepts payment.
Heigel recommended looking out for these signs that may indicate that a company isn’t legitimate:
“Anybody that’s going to be moving shadily or keeping information from you or demanding large payments up front, is going to be a company that you should look twice at,” Heigel said.
