An investigation is underway after a body was found in the Tar River in Greenville Sunday morning.

Around 10:30 a.m., a kayaker found the body in the river, which flows along the Greenville Town Common, a 21-acre park on East First Street, according to a report by WITN. The park serves as a primary civic space for outdoor recreation, community festivals and river access.
Police have not identified the body, but it appears to be a man, according to the police department.

“The circumstances surrounding the death are unknown, and it is too early to determine whether foul play was involved,” the Greenville Police said in a statement.
The department said more information about the discovery will be released as it becomes available.
