The Triangle hot spot reigned supreme as the food website Tasting Table named the best bakery in each state. The website in its May 22 report said the top-notch picks are “continually impressing customers with their standout baked goods, and they’ve earned themselves a strong reputation along the way.”
To choose the North Carolina winner, Tasting Table said it studied bakeries in the state. Businesses were evaluated to determine whether they offered “fair pricing,” creative menu items, a wide selection of foods and “fresh, flavorful products.”
“Our choices were based on a combination of trusted sources, including verified customer reviews on platforms like Yelp and Tripadvisor, as well as community recommendations from Reddit discussions,” Tasting Table wrote. “Recognition from reputable publications and industry awards also came into play, with James Beard Foundation accolades being a strong indicator of excellence.”
Boulted Bread is located at 328 Dupont Circle, near the scenic Boylan Bridge in Raleigh. The business on its website calls itself as a “craft bakery” that makes its own flour for its breads.

The destination started selling baked goods in the Triangle more than a decade ago. Since its early days, the business has moved from its original location on South Street and has made a name for itself, The News & Observer previously reported.
In statewide rankings, Boulted Bread was crowned Yelp’s fan-favorite pastry shop in North Carolina and ranked on a Food & Wine list of top bakeries. The New York Times also highlighted the shop in the 36 Hours travel series, praising its “shatteringly flaky croissant filled with nutty Gruyère and Benton’s hickory-smoked country ham.”
“Boulted Bread has attracted significant press coverage and hundreds of warm recommendations, and the bakery more than lives up to its reputation,” Tasting Table wrote. “The organic, heirloom grains are stone-milled in-house daily, and their rich flavor shines through in the array of crusty loaves and golden pastries.”
Tasting Table also gave nods to the bakery’s morning buns, “which one Yelp reviewer describes as having ‘soft, buttery, almost ephemeral layers of sweet pastry.’” In addition to the buns, customers can enjoy other treats such as cookies and pinwheels.
