A woman is dead and a man is seriously injured after a shooting in Durham early Friday morning, according to police.

Durham police responded to a reported gunshot wound shortly after midnight in the 900 block of East Main Street where they found the pair. Both were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The shooting happened near the Durham Hosiery Mill Apartments, where investigators were processing the scene Friday morning, reported ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner. The site is just down the street from Durham Police Department headquarters.
Police have released no other information, including the woman’s name and whether they’ve identified a suspect or suspects in the case.
The shooting comes days after Durham tapped Stephanie Mardis, the assistant chief of the Greensboro Police Department, as the city’s next police chief.

And earlier this week, Durham officials called for an annual 10% reduction in homicides, nonfatal shootings and shooting-related hospitalizations as part of its recommendations to curb the city’s gun violence.
At least 116 people had been shot in Durham this year as of Aug. 1, 13 of them fatally, according to Durham Police Department statistics.
