Local authorities are responding to an officer-involved shooting in downtown Wilson near the Wilson County Courthouse, they said Monday.

The shooting occurred “at and near” the courthouse Monday, the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation said on X, with SBI detectives assisting Wilson authorities and the N.C. State Highway Patrol in the investigation
Police alerted the public of a “critical incident” Monday morning in downtown Wilson — in Wilson County about 45 miles east of Raleigh — and urged residents to avoid the downtown area.

Witnesses said they heard gunshots and saw people running, WRAL reported.
Wilson City Hall will be closed for the rest of the day and multiple downtown streets will be blocked off as police investigate, the City of Wilson posted to Facebook on Monday afternoon. The city advised the public to avoid the area near the downtown courthouse.
There is no threat to the public, Wilson police said Monday. The Wilson Police Department did not immediately return a request for additional information.
