Shipley Donuts, a Texas-based doughnut giant, plans to open two Raleigh shops in the next two years, bringing nearly a century of doughnut tradition to the Triangle.
Shipley was founded in 1936 in Houston and is now nearly 400 locations large across 13 states. The first North Carolina Shipley opened in 2024 in Charlotte after years of anticipation.
Now it’s Raleigh’s turn.
“We look forward to sharing with Raleigh our 90-year tradition of doing things the old-fashioned way, expertly handcrafting everything we serve and making life delicious each day,” said Shipley Donuts CEO Flynn Dekker in a press release. “Once our future Raleigh guests have a taste of our fresh, handmade daily donuts and famous savory kolaches, they’ll understand why Shipley is a beloved Texas tradition.”
The Raleigh Shipley will be owned by Dana Norman and Plexus Raleigh LLC.
The launch of Shipely in the Triangle is a career departure for Norman, who has worked for two decades as a licensed cosmetologist and funeral director.
“I’ve spent my career taking care of people during life’s biggest moments,” said Norman in a press release. “Now I get to bring people together over something simple and joyful: a hot, fresh donut. Shipley’s heritage and quality made it an easy choice for our first venture into food service.”
Like many shops, Shipley serves yeast and cake style doughnuts, with traditional glazed, cherry, chocolate and strawberry icings, classic fillings and favorites like bear claws and apple fritters.

North Carolina knows a thing or two about classic glazed doughnuts, with Krispy Kreme originating in the state.
But Shipley seems to share a spirit with Krispy Kreme, even guaranteeing warm glazed doughnuts before 10 a.m. every morning.
Shipley will also bring kolaches to the Triangle in a big way. These savory breakfast delicacies are hard to find outside of Texas, where dough is stuffed with fillings like sausage and jalapeños, ham and cheese and bacon, eggs and cheese.
The first Shipley is expected to open in 2027 in Raleigh, but the exact location hasn’t been announced.
