Generations of North Carolina residents who grew up with Neese’s Country Sausage on their breakfast tables had one question when the return of its namesake product was announced: What about the livermush?

Food Lion announced Aug. 4 that Neese’s Regular Country Sausage, Hot Country Sausage and Extra Sage Country Sausage would return to store shelves, starting this month.
At the time, representatives said other items would make a comeback, as well. But the timeline — and whether those products included Neese’s Liver Mush and Liver Pudding — remained unclear.
On Wednesday, Duncan C. White of White Packing Co., the parent company of Neese’s Country Sausage’s new owner, Jesse Jones, told CharlotteFive: “We are currently targeting a relaunch for Neese’s liver pudding in the fall.”
“We are also planning to bring back Neese’s Liver Mush,” he added in a follow-up response.
A USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service letter obtained in December by CharlotteFive through a Freedom of Information request first revealed positive tests for listeria on Sept. 8, 2024, and again Sept. 3, 2025, at Neese’s Greensboro plant.
The partial production shutdown that followed that testing eventually led to a lack of Neese’s products in both grocery stores and restaurant kitchens, with little word on progress until the company’s sale was announced in June.

On Tuesday night, WFMY News 2 in Greensboro reported on newly released USDA records in the matter that showed sanitation concerns remained at Neese’s Greensboro plant through this February.
CharlotteFive reached out to White on Wednesday, asking if the Greensboro plant remained part of Neese’s newly relaunched production.
White told CharlotteFive via email: “We are not producing any of the products at the Greensboro facility. The plant did not meet our food safety standards and was not retained during the acquisition. All Neese’s products are being made in a modern, USDA-inspected facility, on new machinery to ensure food safety.”
Neese’s former Charlotte distribution center, a 0.82-acre facility at 2604 N Davidson St., is now listed for sale with commercial real estate company CBRE for $2.85 million. A CBRE representative didn’t immediately return a message left Wednesday.
