Raleigh and central North Carolina residents should prepare for sweltering temperatures this week, as a late-summer heat wave is expected for the region.

The warming trend begins Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Cloudy morning skies will turn into partly or mostly sunny conditions by this afternoon, and temperatures will climb to the mid-80s to around 90 degrees.
While much of the area will remain dry today, the Weather Service reports a slight chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm in the areas southeast of the Triangle.
The peak of the heat will come midweek, the Weather Service reports.
On Tuesday, the forecast will be sunny with a high near 98 degrees. By Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures are expected to rise to 100 degrees in the Triangle.

Overnight temperatures won’t be much cooler, remaining in the mid-to-high 70s throughout the week.
Friday will see a high of 99 degrees and an expected heat index of 105. A chance of showers and thunderstorms are predicted for that afternoon and evening. The high heat wave could break by Saturday with temperatures dropping to 93 degrees.
Meteorologists urge residents to take precautions this week including staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours and checking on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
