David Butler Jr. hit the Cash 5 jackpot, snagging a $1,138,307 prize in Friday’s drawing, the NC Education Lottery said Monday, Aug. 31. Butler purchased the $1 ticket at the Food Lion on Strickland Road.
Lottery officials said he beat odds of 1 in 962,598 to take the top prize.
The winning Cash 5 numbers on Aug. 28 were 2-13-18-22-39, results show. Butler chose the Quick Pick option and wound up matching all five numbers.
He claimed his winnings on Monday and took home $819,695 after required taxes, the lottery said. The Raleigh man didn’t say how he plans to spend his prize money.
The Cash 5 jackpot sits at an estimated $100,000 after someone won the $130,000 top prize on Tuesday, according to the lottery’s website. The next drawing is Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 11:22 p.m.
A few lucky North Carolinians have netted big lottery prizes in recent months. Kevin Pavel of Clayton won a $250,000 windfall playing the 500X The Cash scratch-off game in July, The Raleigh News & Observer previously reported.

“It was amazing,” Pavel told officials at the time, adding: “I was about to cry.”
More recently, a novice lottery player in Fayetteville turned her $30 play into a $325,758 jackpot in the Pantheon of Olympus: Tides digital instant game, according to the NC Education Lottery. She said she plans to split the prize with her mom, who introduced her to the game.
